How Pre-Vasectomy Sperm Banking Works

Posted on January 1, 2015

Sperm banking offers men the opportunity to preserve their fertility for the future. When a man chooses to use a sperm bank to freeze or cryopreserve his sperm, he is making use of the advanced medical technology available today. There are many reasons why a man would decide to freeze his sperm – perhaps he is facing a cancer diagnosis and wants to preserve fertility prior to treatment, or maybe he is about to be deployed and wishes to freeze his sperm in the event that he faces an injury during deplyoment.

Another popular reason for sperm banking occurs when a man has decided to have a vasectomy but is not entirely sure if he is ready to give up his option to have a child in the future.

For men who are about to have a vasectomy but wish to keep the option of having a child, sperm banking is an excellent option. Using a sperm bank to store frozen sperm provides those who choose this option with peace of mind. They know they are about to undergo a procedure resulting in long-term contraception, but are not giving up the possibility of having a baby using Artificial Insemination (AI), In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), or other fertility treatments.

The process of freezing and storing sperm at the Fertility Center of California is actually quite straightforward. Men are asked to contact our office and make an appointment for semen collection. At this point, a sample will be collected, screened for quality and motility, and frozen. It should also be noted that we offer a @Home Sperm Freezing, in which we send a kit to your home with the materials to collect a usable sperm sample at home. The @Home Sperm Freeze kit is typically offered to those in need of a last-minute option to preserve their fertility.

If you have decided that a vasectomy is the right choice for you but you worry that you might want a child in the future, we recommend that you consider sperm banking. If you would like to discuss your options for pre-vasectomy sperm banking, please contact the Fertility Center of California.
