Gender Selection: Why It's Used and If It's Right for Your Family

Posted on January 1, 2016

Many people assume that gender selection is only used because some couples simply have a personal preference. Although this may be true for some couples, it is unfair to assume this is always the case. There are actually a few different reasons why some couples decide to use gender selection in order to choose whether or not their future child will be male or female.

How does gender selection work?

Gender selection is a service offered at the Fertility Center of California (FCC). The FCC team utilizes a modified version of the Ericsson Method of gender selection, also sometimes referred to as sex selection, a technique that provides higher success rates for couples seeking to produce a child of a particular sex.

Why do some couples use gender selection?

- Family balance

In cases where there may already be one, two or three children of a certain gender, a couple may decide to use gender selection in order to have a child of a different gender.

- Medical and genetic concerns

In certain cases, an inheritable genetic condition may be passed down from a parent to a baby of a particular sex. These genetic conditions, known as sex-linked genetic diseases, include muscular dystrophy, hemophilia, and Fragile-X syndrome. Parents may choose to limit or eliminate their baby’s chances of inheriting these diseases by opting in for gender selection.

- Emotional reasons

Couples may choose to select the sex of their baby due to psychological or emotional reasons. Parents who've experienced the loss of a child may wish to have another baby of the same gender or they may want to avoid having a child of the same gender.
