What Happens after I Donate Sperm?

Posted on January 1, 2018

Becoming a sperm donor is admirable, and the Fertility Center of California supports donors throughout the donation process. For the most part, sperm donation is straightforward, but there are elements of the program, including what is required of the donor, that may come as a surprise.

For example, once you are accepted into our sperm donor program (after careful application and screening), you make a commitment of at least one full year with the expectation of donating about 1-2 times a week. Once this year is complete, it is up to you to either renew your status as a donor or leave the program.

Life after sperm donation

If you are an anonymous sperm donor…

Anonymous sperm donors have elected to donate their sperm without having a relationship with the intended parents, who do not know their donor’s identity. They may have a description of the donor’s physical features, medical history, education and career, but likely little else. Once you leave the program as an anonymous donor, your experience is complete.

If you are a directed or known sperm donor…

A directed or known sperm donor is someone who has an existing relationship with the intended parents. A directed donor is typically a family member or close friend who has offered to donate sperm to a couple in need so they can have a baby. Your relationship with the intended parents and child after the baby’s birth is something that should be discussed and agreed to by all parties in detail prior to the donation process.

Becoming a sperm donor

The experience of sperm donation is often riddled with misconceptions fueled by popular culture, which is why it’s important to research the process and connect with a reputable sperm bank. Experienced fertility specialists can answer any questions or concerns you may have, and there are also online resources where donors can find help as they learn more about the donation process, what’s expected of them and what a program can entail.
